sybil and the new york times

on the heels of my 2 second appearance (at 1:19) on friday on tv (cbs2/kcal9) extolling the nickel diner's bacon donut, i found myself today on the pages of the new york times.

to be exact, there was a picture of people stretching/jogging and some photographer shot a picture of me bending/stretching. no one can see my face but i know my pony tail and my outfit (second from left).

this is no admission of guilt. the law says no one can stretch on the median, i.e. the grassy strip. i was on the street. with no grassy strip in sight. so there.

that being said, here are my two cents:

my understanding is that the santa monica ordinance prohibits any activity on grassy strips in santa monica except for walking and jogging. that means that those doing ab exercises or stretching exercises on the grassy strip are violating the law.

is this ordinance constitutional given that the grassy strip is on public property?

well, methinks that the city can regulate the use of public property based on time, place and manner (TPM). so, for example, i would think that if the ban is enforced at noon or 1 pm when no one in the neighborhood is reasonably expected to be asleep and not be bothered by the exercisers, the ban is probably too restrictive. the idea is that while people have a first amendment right to associate whenever and wherever, the government can still restrict that right based on TPM regulations.

but hey, what do i know?

oh right, i guess i have 14 minutes and 50 seconds of fame left...

sybil and the bacon donut

my 2 seconds of fame (at 1:19). and, i didn't even get a minute, much less 15.

no worries, fame won't change me.

falling out of my mind

it is that time of the year when the santa monica concert series is back in full swing. normally, the bands that play are those that figure prominently in world music or were famous back when i was wrinkle-free.

tonight was a bit different. the fallout boys played. the sad part is, apparently, this band is hip and popular... now. the even sadder part is -- i have never heard of them or their music.

a friend claims the video below showcases one of their more popular songs... which i have never ever heard.

and this is them doing a cover of michael jackson's beat it -- now him i have heard of...

i suppose i am aging.... but then again, they say with age comes wisdom. so if that makes me an old genius, then so be it.

he bent it like himself

so i went to the home depot center in carson, ca to see the los angeles galaxy open their season at home against the san jose earthquakes. ok, to be honest, i went to see what all the hoopla was about DAVID BECKHAM.

so i went. and i saw.

to be exact, i saw him score a goal.

i saw him assist in a landon donovan goal.

i saw him bend it like, um, himself.

i also saw how crappy the team is. generally speaking.

i also saw other people. like his kids. who were sitting with their mom, POSH SPICE. she is a cutie. they were all sitting behind me. ok, behind and up above me. in their fancy box.

i managed a few blurry shots of the kids.

and of POSH SPICE. that was her in the tan outfit. clearly, i cannot be a papparazzi!

that's the blurry shot of KOBE BRYANT, who was sitting in posh's box.

Posted by Picasahere is a more detailed account of my outing and more pictures.

uh oh

FOOTBALL

pre-game

saw a beautiful full rainbow on the 10 on the way to the rose bowl.

the game

went to the rose bowl to watch the ucla v. washington game. it was a w. thank god -- especially after last week's debacle.

we lost patrick cowan to an injury -- saw him on cruthces. we have a third string quarterback (bethel-thompson) most likely starting next week. a walk on. it can't be good. although i'd like to be pleasantly surprised and eat my own words.

again, defense scored a touchdown off an interception. there was a touchdown off a punt return. otherwise, our offense sucks! ...or more appropriately, our play making sucks! so frustrating to know that we always run the ball down the middle. ugh!

doesn't dorrell know that everybody else knows what he's gonna do? and just going back to basics: what about all those false starts (4 of them, i think)??? how many returning starters are there? how many seasons has dorrell been at ucla???? ugh!

a friend said that ben olson is having difficulty learning the west coast offense. he said it took drew olson 3 seasons to get it down before getting good at it.

meanwhile, ben olson has been injured last season and appears to be injured again this season; thus, can't possible be comfortable with dorrells' offense. i said, why can't dorrell coach and make plays that enhances the strength of the players he's got? why does he have to force the west coast offense on them?

i see it like this. coach ben howland works with what he's got -- coach howland's (initial) recruits may not be superstars but we've gotten back to the big dance in his second season, the national championship game in his third season and back to the final four in his fourth season. we've gotten nowhere with dorrell in his first 4 seasons. and i think coach howland had to climb out of a bigger hole from what lavin left than what dorrell had to get out of from what toledo left.

out the tunnel. GO BRUINS!!!

we are the mighty bruins!

fight song. U-C-L-A, UCLA fight, fight, fight!

the hoochie dance has gotten tamer.

post-game

went to roscoe's chicken and waffles after.

saw neyo.

BASKETBALL

let me just say this now. if kevin love makes a sweet outlet pass (or any other pass) to darren collison, that should be referred to as a "love line" -- i think "love connection" sounds too cheesy. you heard it hear first!!! do i have a proprietary interest in that? you betcha!

cabo sports sightings

who knew that cabo san lucas, and specifically, nick san, is a hotbed for sports figures....?

michael strahan of the ny giants was on a date with eddie murphy's ex-wife.

one table over, was lance armstrong with a group of dudes.

and of course, one table over was.... me.

i took off for the nowhere bar. a few minutes later, lance followed. and later still, strahan and his date followed.

that was funny.

btw, thanks to fc for the photo.
